engineer at work

i love being an engineer.

i could design and create something out of nothing. design ni masa kat u; depa ajar concept jer.maksudnya diajar secara teori macamana nak create things. what are the factors kena consider.apa matlamat, predict what are the problems and so on.design juga kena ada beberapa syarat; kena kira costing and praktikality. yer la; kalau design cerek tapi besar macam tong sebab nak isi banyak air, tak guna jugak rite! during my early years with my previous company, i was assigned as a design engineer and my daily task is to create things to assist the productions tu. seronot. kilang tu ada ribu ribu operator cun!! rambang mata!!! hehehe.

projek terbaru yang kena design is a fully automatic machine utk pack jarum. the customer awarded us the project after they agree with our concept design.

normally, client akan nak we all present our concept design dulu. maksudnya secara ringkas how it work, functions and basic design,dari segi size etc etc.

this concept design biasanya we present just lakaran and few rajah rajah. base from that; kira bagi estimate costing. and the costing ni biasanya akan try to follow clientnya budget. this client punya budget is quite reasonable and so far okay la budget tu. the more they allocate will make our job easier.

this are the very basic concept. feeder akan provide the part. one system will pick the part. transfered guna rodless cylinder to station B. kat situ it will rotate and vacuum released.rotation will be using servo motor and encoder.

itu main concept dia. then from the main concept; idea tu kena kembang kembang kembangkan lah. but still on paper lagi. masih lukis lukis and tenyeh tenyeh lagi.. can see my handwriting ?? hahahaha.

this is where the bahagian nak pick up parts tu dikembangkan idea dia. pakai few air cylinders and vacuum system. note – operasi ni adalah dalam cleanroom.. dust free and kuman kuman di bunuh guna ultra violet light. ni jarum nak cucuk cucuk badan beb!

after tenyeh tenyeh and lukis lukis dan garis garis-once i dah puas hati with the concept; then i will use pirated design software utk transfer idea dari dalam kepala kedalam komputer. normally abanglong will use inventor, kalau untuk design machines. kalau normal parts; i will use autocad jerlah.

once dalam komputer; designs jadi a bit senang sebab the software akan bagi tau kalau ada salah design; terlebih panjang ker contohnya, dia akan bagi warning. time ni kena la godek godek that design sampai siap. kena edit sana edit sini, betulkan kiri tengok kiri dah ok tapi kat ujung pulak ada problem and bla bla bla. it would takes few hours to few weeks utk completekan the design.

once design complet; it will produce the BOM. bill of material. daripada sini kita will tau besi banyak mana,saiz, quantity, finishing and so on. based from the BOM; i will get the initial costing from our material suppliers.

then masuk plak hati and jantung serta urat saraf dia. for this machine; movements akan menggunakan pneumatic cylinders. so i had to chose the appropriate type,size,stroke and so on.it will also use the rodless cylinder utk transfer. vacuum pun dia pakai utk suck the parts; kena kira vacuum nyer force supaya suction to just nice and cukup utk angkut 40 pcs at one go.

lepas mechanical items- kena consider plak electronic parts. it will use the PLC. plc ni is macam small computer lah that will arah all the cylinders tu utk function pada certain time for certain period of time. kang kalau salah program, langgar plak mamat tu nanti. nanti ada sensors, ada laser sensors,safety sensors,pressure regulator and so on… hehehe. abanglong will guna servo motor utk rotate the part to certain angle yg kita nak supaya bila part tu jatuh, it will jatuh kat tempat yang sepatutnya dan bukan dibawah meja.

itulah… tu semua baru idea. datang dari kapla ini. sib baik tak botak lagi (read masih encem- hahahahaha)

but its just part of the story.  first nak convince client to use our designs and to award us the project tu pun satu hal dah. ulang alik ulang alik. dah dapat; nak kena design sampai siap with kalau boleh takde errors. dah siap design, kena pastikan machinist buat exactly as per drawing. then bila parts dah siap machining, nak kena pasang and nak kena buat wiring and also programming. dah settle semua; nak kena test and test and test and test sampai ok.

dah ok, tiba lak masa delivery and nak kena pasang kat tempat client. pastu; nak kena tunggu payments pulak. tak pernah  rasanya ada client yang bayar lebih awal dari schedule !

anyway; thats part of what i do for living. ramai lagi designer yang lebih hebat diluar sana. banyak lagi company yang lebih besar dan lebih gah dari mine. but for me; its part of my fardu kifayah. tak kaya tak apa janji hati bahagia!

      akuni – betul…banyak benda kena consider. tapi; kalau design tu boleh kekal 80 tahun…. tadek bisnes laaa gue!!!

  3. hehehe.. teringat bila husband neeza dok cerita pasal kerja dia.. dengan panjang lebar.. lepas tu dalam kepala neeza dok fikir benda lain.. then bila dah habis, neeza tanya dia soalan yang macam bijak tapi sebenarnya takde kaitan pun hahahah!!!!

    Salam abang long, as budak baru blaja… nak tanya sikit kat ‘otai’. Err… apa kelebiban abg long guna servo motor, rather than stepper motor yang kita boleh precise rotation dia? (Unless, fully rotation unnecessary.. then saya faham.) He..he.. guna ‘motor mabuchi utk QD bleh ker? ..

    One more thing, apa risiko guna ‘microcontroller chip base control’ yang lebih murah compare to PLC other than the ‘well known’ safety circuit inside the PLC.

    Mintak maaf bang long, terlanjur ada ‘otai’ yang luas pengalaman.. nak jugak ‘timba’ ilmu… fardu kifayah….

      ammad – hahaha. me no ‘otai’ laaa.
      1- servo motor lebih murah utk this application. lagipun, klu pakai stepper kena ada encoder and seangkatan.
      2- guna micon chip, mmg lebih murah tapi tak user friendly. dan lagipun mereka mereka ini sangatlah suka untuk mengubah suai dan membaiki step step dalam program. lagipun, tgh PLC (tambah klu yg complete with visual display) itu menambahkan mesin nampak canggih. bila mesin nampak canggih maka bolehlah meletak harga yang lebih. bila meletak harga yang lebih……. muahahahahahaha
